Greenhouse Transformation: From Tortoise Haven to Funding Farm2Veteran
For the past decade, our farm’s greenhouse has been a sanctuary for our beloved tortoises. Initially, it served as a place for experimentation and learning, providing a safe and nurturing environment for three tortoises rescued by our founder, Kevin. These tortoises, saved from a pet store on the verge of closing, found a new home in our greenhouse. Among them is Frank the Tank, a Spur tortoise expected to live between 150 to 200 years and grow up to 200 pounds. Alongside Frank, we have two red-footed tortoises that will reach about 30 pounds each and live up to 40 years.
With a passion for horticulture and a knack for innovation, Kevin has always been the driving force behind our greenhouse. His green thumb has turned our greenhouse into a thriving hub of plant cultivation. When our farm transitioned into a charity, Kevin saw an opportunity to use his skills for a greater cause. He transformed the greenhouse into a revenue-generating operation to support Farm2Veteran, our initiative dedicated to feeding veterans in need.
We began selling plants through our Etsy site, offering a variety of succulents and cacti from spring to fall. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, and our plant sales have become a significant funding source for our charity. Recently, we received a grant that will allow us to expand our greenhouse, increasing our capacity to grow and sell more plants. This expansion will enable us to raise even more funds to support veterans.
